A 1945 cabin, kept the way it was

One Salt Lake City family has owned this cabin for more than twenty years, and you rent it straight from us. There's no management company in the middle.

When you send a note through this page, a real person reads it and calls you back. We talk on the phone before any booking happens, because we'd rather know who's coming up to the cabin and you'd probably rather ask your questions out loud.

The cabin itself is the original 1945 building: knotty pine walls, a stone fireplace, flag quilts and snowshoes hanging where somebody hung them a long time ago. We've kept it rustic on purpose, right down to there being no Wi-Fi, which turns out to be the part guests end up thanking us for. It sits inside a private gated community, tucked in among the aspens and the pines, with a party pit out on the deck big enough for everybody at once.

Come up out of the heat

If you're retired in St. George with kids and grandkids up in the Salt Lake Valley, this cabin does two jobs at once.

The first one is obvious in July. St. George summers are relentless, and up here at 8,000 feet the mornings start cool and the evenings ask for a sweater. That's what the wood fireplace inside is for. Come September and October it flips: the canyon turns gold, and the same cabin becomes the best seat in the state for the leaves.

The second job is the one that matters more. You're only twenty minutes up the canyon from Cottonwood Heights, which means the kids and grandkids can pile in the car on a Sunday evening, come up for dinner on the deck, and still sleep in their own beds. That's the whole point of taking a week or two rather than a couple of nights. You settle in, and everybody comes to you.

The cabin sits inside a private gated community, so out of respect for our neighbors we don't post the street address or a map anywhere on this site. Once you're booked, we'll send you the exact address and walk you through the drive.

How it works

1. Tell us your week

   Fill out the short form below. We go Monday to Monday, a week at a time, so just tell us which Monday you'd like to start.

2. We give you a call

   One of us picks up the phone and calls you. Ask us anything about the cabin, the drive, or the canyon.

3. Sign and pay

   You sign a simple rental agreement and pay to hold your dates. That's when the cabin is really yours.

4. We send the address

   Once you're booked, the exact address and directions come straight to you.

A few house rules

Nothing here is meant to be stern. Most of it is the canyon's doing, and the rest is just how the cabin runs best.

• No pets, and this one isn't ours to bend. Dogs and pets are prohibited by law throughout Big Cottonwood Canyon. The whole canyon is protected watershed, the rule is enforced, and it applies to every cabin up here including ours.
• No smoking or vaping, anywhere on the property. We're surrounded by dry timber at 8,000 feet, and that's the beginning and end of the reasoning.
• There's no Wi-Fi, and we did that on purpose. Cell service in the canyon is patchy too, so plan on being truly unreachable. Tell the family before you come, bring the books and the cards, and let the grandkids be bored for a day. It's the best thing about the place.
• Eight overnight guests, and that's the ceiling. Daytime is a different story. Family parties and gatherings are welcome, and the deck was built for exactly that.
• Quiet hours run 10pm to 8am. Sound carries further up here than you'd think, and the neighbors are lovely people.
• All trash goes in the cans inside the cabin. Never outside, never on the deck. There's wildlife around and an open bag is an invitation.
• Checkout is easy. Do the dishes, bag the trash, and head down the canyon by 10am. The cleaning fee covers everything else, so don't spend your last morning scrubbing.
